John’s hesitation to baptise Jesus is
perhaps understandable. John was the prophet, calling people to repentance,
not the Messiah. John knew what his mission was. He had spent many
years in the desert preparing for his work. So it would be fair to
describe John’s desert experience as preparatory. Sometimes people will
approach a desert experience as an escape. Which best word describes your
approach: preparatory or escape?
